Different teams take turns preparing the meal, while the company provides the food and employees can make a voluntary donation to a selected charitable organization. Each month, a different cause receives the funds, giving employees a way to support organizations that are important to their coworkers and communities. One of those causes is the [Marquette Chapter of National AMBUCS](https://www.facebook.com/p/Ambucs-Marquette-Chapter-100091867591094/), which works to provide [Amtryke adaptive tricycles](https://amtryke.org/collections/amtryke%C2%AE-all-trykes) to people with mobility challenges. For Mike Ingles, Engineering Services Business Development Manager at AMT, that connection is personal. Mike’s daughter, [Addie Sanders](https://www.linkedin.com/in/addie-sanders-811846ba/), PT, DPT, **founded the Marquette chapter of National AMBUCS and served as its president before transitioning to the role of vice president.** Addie and her husband Mickey are physical therapists in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and Addie specializes in pediatric physical therapy. **She started the chapter after repeatedly hearing from patients and families about a gap between the need for adaptive recreational opportunities and what insurance would cover as medically necessary.** [National AMBUCS](https://ambucs.org/)’ mission is to inspire people to overcome challenges related to mobility and independence through a network of volunteer chapters working alongside physical, occupational, and speech therapists. The organization owns and operates Amtryke, which designs and manufactures adaptive tricycles for children and adults who may not be able to ride a traditional bicycle. Amtrykes can be powered by the feet, the hands, or a combination of both, with adaptive accessories and configurations tailored to a rider’s abilities. Riders seeking a tryke through a local chapter are assessed by a licensed physical or occupational therapist to help determine the appropriate fit. Local AMBUCS chapters help raise funds for riders who need financial assistance, making the adaptive tricycles more accessible to families who may not be able to afford them.![AMT AMBUCS thank you card](https://blog.appliedmfg.com/hs-fs/hubfs/AMT%20AMBUCS%20thank%20you%20card.jpg?width=311&height=467&name=AMT%20AMBUCS%20thank%20you%20card.jpg) Mike describes the impact of National AMBUCS simply: “The tricycles give people who might otherwise be unable to ride an opportunity to exercise, participate in their communities, and experience some of the freedom that comes with being on a bicycle.” The trykes also give riders an opportunity to feel good about what they can do. The combination of therapy and independence is central to the Amtryke program. National AMBUCS says adaptive cycling can help riders build strength, coordination, and endurance while creating opportunities for recreation and social connection. **“We have had many families report that their child being able to ride their tricycle with family and friends is one way they can remove the ‘otherness’ that sometimes comes with having a disability,” Addie said. “When they see their child miss out on opportunities over and over again, giving them a way to include their kids means the world to them.”**   ## A Local Impact That Keeps Growing The Marquette chapter’s impact has grown quickly. The chapter recently reported that support from donors has helped it purchase 54 adaptive tricycles for individuals over the past three years. One Amtryke rider said that when he is on his tricycle, “it is as if he has no disability.” This rider’s message illustrates the kind of impact AMT employees are helping support through their donations. The Marquette AMBUCS chapter has been selected as the charitable cause for AMT’s company lunches several times; Mike said the most recent contribution was $555 — enough to cover a significant portion of an adaptive tricycle. **Addie said she was “floored” by the support from AMT and its employees, particularly because the Marquette chapter is not geographically local to most of them. To her, the response shows how a cause can become part of the AMT community because it is important to one of the company’s employees.** The first time Mike introduced the cause to his coworkers, he stood in front of the company and explained what his daughter and the chapter were doing. He was surprised by the response, and employees contributed generously to that collection. “Once I gave this personal touch, more people donated,” he said. “It was very, very humbling that AMT helped my daughter and helped the people that need it so much.” At AMT, the monthly lunches give employees an opportunity to learn about causes that are important to their coworkers and contribute together. A few dollars given over lunch can ultimately help provide a rider with an adaptive tricycle, a new form of exercise, a chance to ride alongside family and friends, and greater independence. For Mike, seeing his coworkers support an organization so close to his family has made that tradition especially meaningful. For AMT, it is one example of how community involvement can begin simply: coworkers sharing a meal, hearing someone’s story, and deciding to help.
